The best laptop cooling pad out there is.... a wooden cutting board. Seriously. No BS. With my old $80 cooling pad, my laptop would still overheat occasionally if there wasn't the exact right amount of air supply. Now, my $5 cutting board does it better.

Go figure.

What material is the cooling pad made of anyway?

Aluminum, most likely. Also has powered fans built-in.

Well, I'm stumped and I don't know physics well enough to know why the aluminum wouldn't conduct heat away better, but maybe an insulator would absorb more heat without heating up itself and thereby cool better? Meh? Does that make any sense? Because somewhere in my brain it did.

I'm curious...

After reading your entry, I tried googling to see what others have said about the combination, and people have mentioned that the cutting boards do get quite hot. They also used some sort of X-brace to hold the laptop above the board and improve air circulation.

What kind of setup do you have? Is the heat being dissipated by being absorbed into the wood, or do you have some system set up to increase air circulation between the laptop and the wood?

And what kind of effect does this have on the cutting board? o-0 I would imagine that kind of heat would warp the wood after an extended period of time... not to mention a growing fear of burning splinters in thighs. o.o But that is just me. Would you say the board is still cooking-enabled?

I sit with the board on my lap, with the comp on top. That's it. The board doesn't get hot, the comp doesn't overheat. Beyond that, who knows?

I must try this :o the loud under-laptop fan is driving me maaaaad.
